Energy Chain Protection Cage

Client: A Subsea OEM

A Squared Case Study: A Subsea OEM

The challenge

The client approached A Squared for our expertise in complex structural design and use of advanced numerical analysis.

A subsea drilling template required Energy Chains to run up and down the tower to manage power and hydraulics to the drill tables.  The Energy Chains required a steel housing. Principal requirements:

  • Provide protection and guidance against underwater snags and wave-induced movement.
  • Minimal space envelope.
  • Minimal deflection under wave particle velocities of 5 m/s.

Following the concept development and analysis, the client required detailed fabrication drawings to proceed with construction.

The A-Squared Solution

The solution had to be as light as possible whilst maintaining stiffness under wave action to minimise deflection under operational conditions.

A general concept was developed to allow waves to pass through the structure, whilst maintaining adequate stiffness against wave particle velocity to provide guidance for the Energy Chains.

Voe Marine (our strategic partner) took the A Squared analysis and developed the concept into fabrication drawings before fabricating the structures.
